Larry the Lifer
A Friend in Need
Larry was having a special meeting.
The meeting was with Tiny and Legs.
They wanted to go to a concert, but the warden said no.
But they didn’t care.
They were going to go anyway!
Larry and Tiny and Legs were making the plan when Average Joe showed up.
Larry didn’t like Average Joe.
Average Joe was not as useful as Tiny and Legs.
Average Joe wanted to go to the concert too.
But Larry said “No!”
He didn’t need Average Joe.
That night, Larry and Legs and Tiny started to sneak out to the concert.
Larry saw Average Joe following them.
“Go home, Average Joe!” Larry whispered.
But Average Joe didn’t go.
There wasn’t much time. Larry sighed. Average Joe could come along.
Larry took out the plans he had drawn and showed them to Legs and Tiny.
Tiny squeezed through the bars and found the keys.
Legs lifted everyone over the wall.
It was all part of Larry’s plan.
But Average Joe didn’t help at all.
Soon there was a loud noise. The warden knew they were sneaking out!
Larry and Legs and Tiny and Average Joe began to run.
They would be in big trouble if they got caught!
They ran past the chemical plant.
They ran past the warehouse.
Soon Larry was at the old junkyard. But there was a fence in the way!
“Tiny, go under the fence!” Larry said. But Tiny was not there.
“Legs, go over the fence!” But Legs was gone, too.
Where were Tiny and Legs?
Now it was just Larry and Average Joe.
“I can give you a boost,” said Average Joe.
Average Joe helped Larry over the fence.
Larry opened the gate for Average Joe.
They went to the concert and had a great time.
And Larry learned an important lesson:
Your friends may be short or your friends may be tall,
But the friend with your back is the friendest of all.
